An accident on Friday claimed the lives of an elderly couple which occurred in the 1800 block of Willow Street Pike in West Lampeter Township. It was around 1:20 p.m. when the tragedy happened.
The fatality, identified as Ellis Hawk Jr., age 86 and resident of Willow Valley Retirement Community, was operating his white Nissan Altima going south from Lancaster when for some reason, his car veered across the center line. The car hit a black Glatfelter’s flat bed roll back tow truck.
Hawk’s wife, identified as Sarah Hawk, age 84 and also resident of Willow Valley, was his passenger and died instantly after the crash. Ellis Hawk, sustaining critical injuries, was immediately transported to Lancaster General Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. The two occupants of the tow truck were uninjured.
Due to the crash, the police closed a three mile section of Willow Street Pike for three hours Friday afternoon, from 130 p.m. to 430 p.m.
The crash team, together with the West Lampeter Police and Willow Street Police, assisted in the investigation.
Lancaster County confirmed that that two people died in a crash on Friday in the Township of West Lampeter. The two victims were: Ellis Hawk, Jr., 86 and his wife, Sarah Hawk, 84. Both are residents of Willow Valley Retirement Community.
The car, operated by Hawk, Jr. went over the median line and collided with a tow truck. His wife died in the scene while the husband expired in the hospital. The accident occurred around 1:20 p.m. in the 1800 block of West Lampeter Township.
The mishap closed Willow Street Pike for a couple of hours.
